The City of Manchester, NH provides a free summer day camp, Fun in the Sun, for children ages 6-12. The children must be residents and must be 6 years old by the registration date of July 5th, 2012. The program runs from July 6, 2012 to August 16, 2012, Monday – Friday, 9:00 am to 3:30pm.
There are three sites for the camp, so you can choose the one that’s most convenient for you; JFK Memorial Coliseum, Livingston Park (Dorr’s Pond House), and Piscataquog River Park. You should go to the site you want on registration day, which is Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 8:00 am. The spots fill up quickly (hello, it’s free!), so make sure you’re there bright and early. You must have your child’s birth certificate and a proof of residency would probably be a good idea too.
The kids are supervised by Parks and Recreation summer staff who oversee playground time, arts and crafts, swimming at city pools, local field trips, sports days, and fun themed days like Christmas in July.
I’ve never signed my kids up for Fun in the Sun, but I have a friend who swears by it. It’s not full time childcare, but it works for her family because her husband drops the kids off on his way into work, and she picks them up after finishing her hospital shift as a nurse and catching a few hours of sleep. Her kids love the program and she raves about it every year.
It’s also great if you just want your kids to have a few weeks fun summer activities, or you want to get them out of the house for a few hours every day without spending a lot (or any!) money.
