Manchester Kids Marathon
If you live in southern New Hampshire you should check out the Manchester Kids Marathon. The Kids Marathon takes place the same weekend as the Manchester City Marathon. Many local schools are putting together teams for the marathon, but you don’t need a team for your child to be able to participate. And, bonus, it’s free!
The idea is for kids to run and/or walk one mile per week, beginning the first week of May, until the marathon. On Saturday, November 3rd, 2012* all participants will meet together at Livingston Park to complete the final mile–for a total of 26.2 miles. That morning there will also be carnival-like activities and healthy food samples for the participants and their families.
While the focus is on the kids, the organizers strongly encourage entire families to train together. In the past, many families have reported that their time spent training together not only helped them build a healthier lifestyle, but it strengthened their family relationships.
The website has a downloadable pdf that includes a training program, exercise tips, and a healthy eating plan. As stated on the pdf, the overall goal is “To promote physical fitness, nutritious eating, and overall healthy lifestyle.” Even if you don’t live in the area the resources are fantastic and could easily be used for your own family.
I’m looking forward to getting moving with my family and my kids are super excited to be participating. Hope we see you there!
*The city website has not been updated to reflect the 2012 date, but I’m told that should happen soon.
